On November 18, 2024, a knowledge session was held on Augmented and Mixed Reality (AR/MR) in MRO and MRO education. Contributions came from Prof. Dr. Max Louwerse (Tilburg University/DAF Technology Lab), the AR/MR team at the Air Campus (part of the Royal Air Education and Training Center at Woensdrecht Air Base), and Fokker Services Group.

Research and learning potential

Professor Louwerse introduced the Mixed Reality Continuum and the CAVE 360° immersive VR facility, which is used for learning, experimentation, and research. AR/MR/VR is not a universal solution, but it can complement classroom learning, testing, and 2D learning pathways, both for individual/personalized, and collaborative learning.

Practical applications in remote support

Fokker Services Group demonstrated the use of the Hololens for remote support. This allows teams to collaborate remotely, share information, and solve problems. Although the possibilities are vast, broad operational deployment requires careful implementation.

Guidance in the learning process

The Air Campus presented an AR/MR solution for guiding students in practical experience in sheet metal work. It has been found that successful application requires early involvement of supervisors, acceptance by students, and attention to the user experience and the perceived added value of the application.
