On Wednesday, May 21st, 2025, the Development Center for Maintenance of Composites (DCMC), in close cooperation with Hive Aerospace Collective, hosted the event ‘Robotizing and Automating Composite Maintenance’. The event brought together a wide audience of experts from airline MRO, research institutions, and innovative companies. The central question of the day was: How can we bring inspection and repair of aircraft structures to the next level through automation and robotics?

Showcases

The program featured powerful showcases from a diverse group of organizations:

  • SAM XL presented their innovations and projects in robotizing aircraft and parts inspections.
  • Ommatidia LIDAR presented large-area inspection using advanced LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) technology.
  • NLR (Netherlands Aerospace Centre) introduced GERDA (Generic Robots for Shop Maintenance), laser ultrasonic inspection technology, and the human aspects of collaborating in an automated world.
  • Cboost showed the potential of AI in automation.
  • OPTRION highlighted their NDT solution for composites, based on shearography.
  • ExRobotics wowed the audience with a live remote demonstration of their customized AGV robots performing a walk-around inspection at an oil and gas refinery – showing how labor-intensive and potentially dangerous inspections can be automated and controlled from a distance.

Networking

The presentations sparked lively discussions, and as the event transitioned into informal networking, attendees quickly formed ideas for new initiatives and collaborations. This is exactly what both DCMC and HIVE stand for, which is to connect innovation, expertise and people to shape the future of aerospace maintenance.

Save the date: The next DCMC event will take place on Wednesday, November 12th, 2025. Don’t miss it!
