On September 19, the Aircraft Maintenance & Training School at Business Park Aviolanda officially opened the Newton Room Noord-Brabant. This took place together with concept developer FIRST Scandinavia and main sponsor Boeing, in the presence of the King’s Commissioner Ine Adema. This first permanent Newton Room in the Netherlands introduces children aged 10-15 to science and technology in a fun, hands-on way.
The purpose of this learning lab is to get children excited about STEM: Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics. They learn to create a flight plan, for example, and execute it on one of three modern simulators. Or they are given the taks to program a mobile robot that has to travel a specific distance. Under the supervision of an instructor, the Newton Room programs combine theory and practice. With this concept, the school hopes to contribute to the influx of young people into STEM education. “Students who become enthusiastic about STEM at a young age become the best innovators and technicians of the future,” said Managing Director Wim Blinkhof.
In her speech, King’s Commissioner Ine Adema paid close attention to all the developments at Business Park Aviolanda, now also the location of the new Newton Room. “The Beethoven deal and Brainport [Eindhoven] are much in the news. However, the brains of Brabant are not limited to the east of our province. What is being accomplished here in the west of Brabant is also impressive and significant.”
