3D printing, or Additive Manufacturing (AM), is an important topic on the innovation agenda of HIVE Aerospace Collective. On January 28, 2025, we therefore welcomed a delegation from Materialise in Leuven, one of the largest 3D printing/AM companies in Europe.
With their many years of experience in certified production of aircraft parts for Airbus, among others, Rico Engelman and Erik de Zeeuw from Materialise shared their vision of the opportunities this technology offers for the aviation sector. They demonstrated how Additive Manufacturing can contribute not only to more efficient production, but also to innovation in design and maintenance.
The session ended with a lively discussion about possible applications of 3D printing in aircraft maintenance (MRO). Both the technical and certification challenges were acknowledged.
During an earlier knowledge session on this topic in 2024, it became clear that various organizations within our cluster are already working with the technology. However, there are still plenty of opportunities for further implementation. We will therefore continue to explore the possibilities together, and exchange knowledge, to accelerate innovation in MRO.
